A Pick of Prom Dresses that Suit Different Body Types

A Pick of Prom Dresses that Suit Different Body Types

You might have decided, eons ago, which prom style or design you fancy the most. Perhaps you've seen it on a celebrity you admire or you must have seen it on display in your favourite shop. There is absolutely nothing wrong but beware not every dress looks good on different figures. You may eventually find that the dress you've envisioned yourself wearing on your prom night might not really look good on your figure upon fitting it. A tight-fitting dress, for instance, would not look as flattering on a fuller figure as it would on a toned and fit body nor would a high-waist dress suit a female with a short torso. But if all is well, who knows? You're dream dress might just be the perfect dress for you.
Anyway, it will not hurt you to know which dresses complement your body type. Below are some guidelines you can bear in mind when choosing the perfect prom dresses.

Know your body

You don't really have to know your specific body measurements unless you are planning on having your gown sown by your dressmaker. However, knowing your figure, shape, and height can prove very useful when choosing which style best complements your body.

Dark colors usually look sexier on any body type

Ladies fancy wearing dark colors such as night black, emerald green, scarlet red, and smoky grey because they are usually more flattering on any body type and almost always achieves you that aura of sexy sophistication that most ladies aim for. If you're a bit on the heavy side, dark colors will definitely make you look slimmer.

These are just some of the basics you probably know but have forgotten out of excitement. If you want to know more about which specific styles may suit you and your body type, read on below for more detailed descriptions of prom dress styles.

Figure-hugging dresses for slender bodies

Just about any dress type fits a slender-bodied woman. But what will look most flattering on a slender body is a dress that clings to the body. A tight-fitting short-length cocktail dress is a good way to flaunt a fit body. These types of dresses are made with a stretchy fabric or any fabric supported by garters. Choose a dress that will show off your narrow waist and perfect hips.
Another variation of this classic design is the mermaid dress or flared dress. You will look even sexier with a tight-fitting mermaid dress on. The dress is tight fitting from the torso to the thighs and knees until it flares slightly starting below the knee. Flared dresses are very sexy as they expose and enhance the hour-glass shape of slender bodies.

A-line dresses or empire-cut dresses with high waist for the plus-size woman

If you are slightly on the heavy side, especially bottom-heavy, do not fret. You can do magic to your body and hide problem areas such as a wide waist and hips by choosing an A-line dress with a high waist. The A-line dress is a neutral design which is suitable for any body type but an A-line dress with a high waist is highly-recommended for bottom-heavy ladies. The top of the dress is form-fitting. The waistline is raised slightly higher than the person's natural waistline. The dress flows freely from the waist downwards hiding those problematic areas.
An alternative design would be the empire-cut dress with high waist. The empire cut dress is much like the A-line but highlights the bust area. This will look great on full figures. Empire-cut dresses may or may not be strapless. Much like an A-line dress with a high waist, an empire-cut dress with a high waist also hides a wide waist and hips.
If you don't feel comfortable with any of the two mentioned designs, you can always choose a design you fancy and accentuate it with a wide, flat belt with a huge belt buckle (very fashionable these days) to achieve the high-waist style. Moreover, choose a belt of a totally different color from your dress. If your dress is dark-colored, choose a light-colored or bright belt and vice versa.

Are there styles which will suit any body type?

Yes there are styles which will look great on any body type such as the halter dress, the V-waist, and dresses with an uneven hem.

The Halter Dress
Halter dress is probably the most popular style among ladies. Halter dresses are one-piece dresses made from one continuous piece of fabric. The whole dress is held by the straps which are usually knotted at the back of the neck. The straps could be either thin or wide, round or flat.
What attracts girls to this style is the effect it has on one's body. The halter dress highlights the face, neck, shoulders, and breast area. Muscled shoulders are tamed and made to appear more slender with halter dresses. Small busts appear bigger in halter dresses especially ones with a low neckline which expose some cleavage. Ladies with medium-sized to big busts can also opt for halter dresses.

The V-waist
Any V-waist gown will look flattering on just about any body shape and size. V-waist gowns are basically any gown with a V-shaped waist. It could be a halter dress, an A-line dress, or even a strapless bodice. The V-shape waist will make your waist look narrower, and hence, smaller. Also, if you have a short torso, V-waist gowns achieve for you the illusion of length.

Dresses with uneven hemlines

Dresses with uneven hemlines are sometimes referred to as hankie hem dresses or asymmetrical dresses. The uneven cut of the hemline is a great way to achieve the illusion of height. Moreover, as most of these dresses come in lengths that reach just below the knee, the uneven cuts will look flattering on your legs. Best worn with high-heeled shoes, these prom dresses also accentuate the calves and heel which will then appear slimmer for a more toned look.
