How to Glam Up your Hair for Prom Night

So you've chosen your prom dress already, your shoes and accessories. You're practically tingling all over with excitement and just about ready to dash to your prom venue. But wait! You might be forgetting an important component in your prom look: your hair. You just can't go to the prom with fly-away unkempt hair or your hair in a messy ponytail the way you could when strolling the park or playing Frisbee with your chums on one lazy afternoon. It's very unflattering, not to mention, unfashionable. Prom night is one of those rare occasions which give you an excuse to look extravagant, classy, sophisticated, and fashionable, so why not make the most out of it?
First decide whether you want to do your hair on your own, at home or in the salon. Sometimes, prom goers who find themselves working around a tight budget would prefer to do their hair themselves or have some close family relative or friend do it for them. Doing your hair at home is fairly easy. You can choose to opt for clean simple looks such as a clean and smooth ponytail or headband. You can also choose to wear your hair down and accentuate it with a thin headband adorned with a couple of jewels. Just be sure to eliminate any frizz by putting on a dollop of conditioner if necessary. Tame your curls by brushing them gently. If you want to achieve a slightly more complicated hairstyle that looks as if it has been made in the salon, try browsing through fashion magazines. These are sure to have some step-by-step guide to getting those braids and other styles right. However, if you have the money to spare, you can always have your hair done in a salon nearby by a professional. This way you do not have to tire yourself much in the few hours before your prom night and be able to relax. Also, these professionals know what they're doing better than you do. Be sure to reserve a slot with your hairdresser a few weeks earlier to avoid prom season traffic in the salons. You should also come in prepared with a picture or a description of the look you want to achieve so that you can brief your hairdresser before the process starts. Having your hair done in a salon won't really cost you much and is worth it. You would be spending around $30 on the average. Another thing to remember when having your hair done in a salon is to come in a button-down shirt which you can easily remove. Never come in collared shirts which you have to pull on top of your head to remove because it will ruin your hairdo.

Tips on finding the right style:

1. Be resourceful. Browse through fashion magazines to get a general idea of which hairstyles are considered trendy these days. See some of the styles that celebrities wear. When you've found the hairstyle that you want, look for a step-by-step guide on how to achieve the look.
2. Think back to the time when you last had your hair treated. It might have been months ago or even years. Your hair might have become dry, damaged, and frizzy since then. Before attempting to do your hair for prom, try to pamper yourself with a hair spa. It is worth it and would make your hair easier to style if it is smoother and healthier.
3. Get some highlights. There is nothing more dull and unattractive than a one-toned hair. It will usually make you look older. Try livening your look with some fresh highlights. You can consult your hairdresser which highlights are safer to get or be spontaneous and get something funky such as a pinkish red or dark purple. It really just depends on how you carry the look. Colors like these give you the attitude you need to make that grand entrance to the prom.
4. Gels, mousse, and hairsprays are very handy and will keep your hair from getting undone when you enjoy yourself at the prom. Use any of the three when you do your hair at home or when you're having it done in a salon. Be careful not to use too much of one product though. Some can make your hair as dry and hard as a twig. Choose one that has a moisturizer or gloss to maintain that brilliant shine of your hair. Hairpins are also useful in tucking in those uncooperative strands but be sure to hide them as they can be very unflattering.
5. Choose a look that is not that outrageous. You would want to look elegant and sophisticated in your gown and choosing a wild hairstyle is probably not apt for the occasion. You can still express yourself with tamer more appropriate hairstyles. Also, when choosing your hairdo, choose a style appropriate for your age. You wouldn't want to look 20 years older than you are, would you?

Tips on how to have your hair made in a salon:

1. Always reserve a slot. It is easier and much less of a hassle if you do this. Moreover, your hairdresser will be able to concentrate on you and perfect your hair. When setting an appointment with your hairdresser, ask how long the process will take so you can adjust your schedule and be able to accomplish everything you need to do before the event starts.
2. Have a nice chat with your hairdresser before the session starts. Describe in full detail or as best you can how you want your hair to look or provide your hairdresser with photos to guide him/her.
3. Avoid any distractions such as cellular phones. Avoid receiving calls when in the middle of the session. Unnecessary movement may distract your hairdresser and make it harder for him or her to do a good job. Always follow what he or she says. If they ask you to tilt your head down, straighten your back, or avoid moving your head, then do so.
